Tanking on to old plasterboard

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hi all, apologies if I have not put this is the correct place.

I am currently in the process of renovating my bathroom with new suite and 10mm ceramic tiles floor to top.

I have striped off my old tiles and I have been left with plasterboard in very poor condition where all the paper has been ripped off so I cannot tile on top of this. This is not too much of a problem as on the exterior walls I will replace with new board.

However, on the two interior walls, where the bath with shower will be, the partition walls are the 1970’s egg box paramount partitions so replacing the plasterboard is simply not an option without taking the entire wall out.

I’ve looked at Tanking as an option but I am concerned because of how ripped up the paper is on the original plasterboard, how well the tanking will adhere to it? I believe the tanking is supposed to take tile weight of 32kg sq m, but will tanking on to plasterboard with ripped paper surface ruin its integrity for weight?

Oberboarding the existing wall is not an option for space reasons (very small bathroom with already tight fit).

Thanks for your help.
