so if i use plywood then backer boards, do i still need to waterproof them aswell?

ok thanks, does that mean the boards are waterproof & i only need to waterproof the joints? what trowel size would i need for travatine 12mm 600x400 tiles on the floor & walls? also what adhesive would you recommend for a slow tiler?
