I agree but what's the difference between a new member who's been tiling 6 months sending a Yell link and a **** poor website to an admin, and young Teabag? Seems a bit wrong discriminating against one person when there are probably a good number of others in here who have spent less time tiling than most have spent on the toilet.

Suppose it's back to the old time served vs course debate, when should you call yourself a tiler? When you've served four hard years or when you've done a four week course and put an ad in the paper? Does this mean apprentices shouldn't be allowed in the Arms either?

Oh dear, please don't mistake this for me sticking up for short course tilers as I believe in apprenticeships through and through

Edit, just see he was banned for whatever reason.

I done a four week course 8 years ago and it has only been in probably the last two - two and half years that i now not only call myself a tiler but actually feel like i know this trade. Some of these courses are rubbish, i learnt sod all on mine and in the area where i live there is centre turning out 20 or so a month of potential tilers.... I only know of one other guy around here who is still at it a few years later.

I only got good when i befriended a 'proper' tiler who was prepared to share his knowledge and advice with me and was happy to help me out on jobs. That coupled with incredible hard work, pride swallowing and providng a great service for 6 years has now at long last paid off and my name is out there and my reputation is solid enough for me to not worry about finding work anymore.

So i actually agree with you that the best way to learn this trade is by serving an apprenticeship, you just cannot beat hands on experience. Or you could do it the incredibly hard way like i did. The trouble is there is a million times more to this trade than i ever thought there was when i done the course and it's this missunderstanding of how in depth it is that cause so many of these poor sods who spend there money on a course only to end up giving it up because they aint confident enough with the trade or aint got the time or the money to learn it properly. Not all of them mind you but certainly most.

Just my opinion though.... And what do i know, i'm just a tiler

Interesting, IMO, I'd say in the last few years there seems to be a growing divide between the course v time served tilers on this forum, I don't think it's always been here but did manifest at some point then developed through the years. My situation is pretty much mirrored by tg smiler above, course tiler and very proud of it although it's the little golden nuggets of information you find from the real tile masters along the way that make you! As for t bag, I wish him all the very best and although he gets mocked a bit on here, I think he will have a future in this trade! I don't understand why he was never allowed in to the arms though, that always puzzled me??

Cheers Charlie, the one area i can say that doing a course has been of an advantage to me is that it meant i had to find out all about the products, substrates, tools etc for myself, which meant that because i was researching all the time that i learned all the 'latest' trends and products and methods etc in tiling..... And this has in turn taught me to never stop learning about this trade

I know plenty of so called time served tilers that know next to nothing about the theory behind tiling. Maybe they knew it once and forgot, or maybe they started when every job was a 6x6 ceramic, and haven't bothered keeping up with the trade. Absolutely no knowledge of different substrates, or weight limits. Refuse to tank anything, and won't be told anything by a "course tiler", because they tile in the real world, and don't get their knowledge from a course and the Internet.... Dullards! lol

As for ash, he's harmless enough. Maybe he should come with a warning label, so people know not to take his advice as gospel, but at least he tries to help.

I don't understand the crap ash gets , he is obviously determined to have a go ,the country would be a better place if more young lads were determined to work instead of make baby's smoke weed and claim benefits .
His tiling seems ok,he will learn more as he goes along, and hopefully get better.
every man and women on here has had to start somewhere and even made mistakes, give the lad a break .

Products & methods (not just in our trade) are changing all the time so you HAVE to be constantly researching and adapting yourself in order to stay on top of the game.

The problems start when someone thinks they know it all and don't bother learning..... The old 'that's how i have done it for 20 years' attitude is no good...Our products are constantly changing (for the better) and they change in order to suit the change in products in other trades and the moment you think you know it all is when you get left behind.

Throwing gossip about and listening to you lot on here is a very very easy way of keeping ahead of the game, the little tips and swapping of knowledge is invaluable, and it's only those who bother to keep on top of the game who can truly say they are a professional trdesperson...in my opinion anyway :smiley2:

I agree with letting the lad-in , as was said he is trying hard to get going on his own !! he deserves a go, there are some proper lazy-gits out there , i had one jack -on me this week after the first day , apparently the work was to hard for him at 24 years -old so he left me with at 55 to do his work and mine , but i just got-on on my own ,at least ash is trying , and if he was nearer to me i would give him a go.......
