while people will under cut to get the job it will not work, It will be difficult to control, maybe on site work you may have a chance but domestic, Forget it.

If you get the majority of your work on recommend like I do,and avoid site work then It's not a problem !!!

Couldn't agree more Dave. I think it is a scandelous situation where you do work for a builder and they seem to have the right to automatically reduce the amount of the contract for "retention" - and don't even pay the VAT on the "retained" bit. The subby is then left with the situation where he/she needs to amend their sales invoice to reflect the reduced vat paid over. Also I believe it is rare where a contractor follows up and actually PAYS the retention when due , it has to be chased. Scandelous!!!

As for the payment in 30 days stuff, there is legislation to cover that and it can be enforced should the subby be inclined.

even worse after you invoice them they send you payment less a main contractors discount and thats the first you have heard of it
