I am an idiot.

Getting ready for the football I clear out the wine fridge of wine and prepare to stock it with bargain beers (£10 a case Sainsburrys) well in advance.

My lovely designer built in wine fridge.... Centre Piece of my kitchen....

I notice the white plate behind heavy with Ice so decide to do a quick defrost. Instead of waiting hours for it to drip on my floor I help it along by chipping it off the plate with a knife...

Bullseye and straight through the micro bore. Unit is now scrap. Cant be repaired.

Yes thats my other option but £250 excess. I was ringing round to see if someone could patch it and re-gas it. But everyone says its a no-no

But £250 is better than paying the full price. My premiums will probably go up £18 a year but still worth it

I did find a spares place with lots of spares for the WE26

But when I talk to Fridge Repair companies they all say no straight away.

I was going to call Hotpoint on 08448 224 224 but its just an automated booking line to get an engineer out. No pre-advice. I dont want him to turn up and say "no can repair - bill - £90 for call out "

My plan is to notify the home insurance people. If they want to do the three quote thing then worth noting.

Iv rung a mate who recommends these guys mate might be worth a try if not hotpoint them selfs might do the part?

If not what about having the whole repaired then re gssed?

I also contacted Nationwide Home Appliance Repair Services - 0800 Repair and they said no can do.

Let me contact the home insurance. If they have an incentive to avoid a replacement then it will be them that makes the most noise about repairing the unit.

A tip for the future, get a large baking tray with couple of inch high sides and lay it on the floor outside the fridge, place tea towels leading from the fridge 'floor' to the baking tray and just leave it. Providing the baking tray is lower the tea towels will transfer the water to the baking tray over night with no mess or hassle. And certainly no £1000 bills!
