Tile on tile preperation

Hi guys, i'm new here , but looks like a good forum.

Doing a bathroom refurb job for a friend of the family. The property is circa late 30's I'm guessing. Been removing existing tiles but found that a 2nd layer of original tiles on cement are underneath.

Taken me 2 days so far to get the half tiled walls stripped back. Even tried my small electric breaker , but lump hammer & bolster seems the only way & even this is causing some quite serious damage.

Really slow progress.

The back wall of the bathroom is fully tiled & I have removed the first layer of tiles fairly easily, tried in 2 / 3 different places to get the originals off .but it is gonna be the job from hell.

The original tiles are 15cm x 15 cm & seem very flat very flat so can i tile over these again if i use some sort of primer or something. Or can I just go straight onto them as was previously done.

I would not normally even think about tiling on tile normally, but this job is a nightmare as I am causing damage to the walls by trying to get these off.

There is no loose or blown tiles on this wall anywhere ,they are very very secure,.

It is not something I would do to be honest. It is always best to remove as many layers as possible and go back to a solid back round. The choice of how to proceed is entirely down to you but I would have a good search on here on tiling over tiles.

If they ARE that well adhered and quite a lot of sand/cement tiles were fixed to last, then use an appropriate adhesive for tiling on tiles, allow additional drying time before grouting, and make sure the new adhesive is also suitable for the size of the new tiles.
Are the walls behind brick rendered or stud work and mesh?

Tile on tile is possible... what substrate do you have and what tiles are you intending to fix now..?

Would do no harm giving them a bit of a key with a cup grinder and then priming them with a suitable primer to go with your adhesive. Some of those sand cement fixed walls will never come off for anything short of an earthquake.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just to clear up the question - the old tiles are on a 4" clinker block wall . doing serious damage trying to remove them. Probably gonna go with cement board screwed & plugged to old tiled wall . Regards, Al
