Tile on top or start from scratch?

Hi all,

just been to look at my first job. The customer only wants 1 wall tiled in his bathroom. The problem is that the plasterboard has got backing paper over it and then been painted on. As its a rented house he only wants the cheap 6" square ceramic tile put on. Would it be best to pull it all down and put new boards up or could i tile over the existing painted boards? I have recomended pulling it all down and starting down. Is this over the top?

Is the plasterboard skimmed under the paper? If it is, steam the paper off, if not, a reboard would be a quick and cheaper solution.

Agreed, a lot less hassle to just reboard. Should get change out of £20 for materials and will be quicker than trying to prep the current wall.
