Tiles & extreme heat advice please

Hi guys. I have recently purchased a log burner for my own home. I intend to tile the chimney back and hearth. This will get the full heat from the fire as it will only be a few inches away. The guy I bought the fire off said any tile but marble !?
Topps tiles say ONLY porcelain will do.

1. Will only porcelain do?
2. Will travertine work as it is solid and does not have a surface that can come away?
3. What adhesive?

Granite tiles would be fine too!

I would be reluctant to use porcelain as they conduct heat amazingly easily, I put one on a gas ring for about 20 seconds once turned it off then put some kitchen paper on it, it spontaneously combusted the kitchen roll when touched the tile so if you have pets or kids that may touch the hearth steer clear of porcelain tiles ,choose a stone such limestone or york stone they conduct the heat less well and will be safer in my opinion

Given that Graham has selected travertine which is in essence a limestone, it seems he has made a good choice then. Well done mate :lol:.

Travertine tiles been in place and fire burning bright for a week now, not a problem.
