mapegrip is not suitable for porcelain or stone (100% deffinate no no!) it is also limited to no more than 300x300 ceramics which many would say is pushing it. Generaly due to the other disadvantages many tilers choose not to use it.

Some disadvantages include;

settting times - which can be days in some cases.

Requirements for curing - ready mixed adhesive relies on absorbtion in order to cure. It need air and it need to be absorbded by both tile and substrate so if you put over substrates sush as paint etc then it can take longer to set. Also, the larger the tile the less air that will get into the adhesive to assist in the curing proccess.

Bonding abilaties - Ready mixed doesnt have the bonding strenght that is associated with cement based prducts especialy those of which have been enahcned with polymers.

Slippage - ready mixed adhesvies allow more slipping than that of a cement based adhesive which makes fixing more time consuming.

These are some of the reaons why the professional tiler chooses to use a cmenet based product.

Hope this helps

Sorry I'm back!
can somebody explain why the mapegrip tile adhesive wouldn't be suitable? are the tubbed adhesive only suitable for a certain type of job?

The tubbed adhesive air dries (if you will) but the cement based adhesive chemically sets/dries. Its far stronger and far better. Plus you can pack out (within reason) to your hearts content. BUT, a tiler will always, or should sort out the walls first so they are flat and true. A perfect wall = perfect tiling. If a wall is bent or dished, the tiling will never look quite right, and everything takes loads longer, its much messier and more cost in time and material.

Thanks tfs we'll stick to 1.2 litres and no more! the rest of the tiles seem ok its just the ones in and around the window that pulled off easily even after being up a week! we've got about 12 tiles to put up so hopefully it'll be ok this time now we have the correct adhesive! I only wish we had joined this forum before we even started!

We hear that a lot :smilewinkgrin:
