Tiling a chimney breast

Hi need to tile a chimney breast with stone tiles which are quite heavy I've had the breast skimmed but have read up about a 20kg weight limit per square metre since. Would it be ok to put cement board onto the wall to hold the tiles ?

yes, but you would have to mechanically fix them.

Could the board be screwed to the wall or would it need something stronger

Screwed would be fine so long as there is a good anchor.
