It's a piece of wood with your tile size marked on there - allowing for your spacer size too. Easiest way is to set out a row of tiles on the floor using the correct size spacers then place a piece of batten next to it. Mark the tiles onto the batten then it's easier to move the wood round and accurately mark where your tiles will fall.

I was taught this 3,4,5 method but I cannot for the life of me remember the workings of it.

a triangle 3 sides 3 x whatever x 4 times whatever x 5 times whatever gives you 90 deg angle

Yeah it's one of the few right angled triangles following Pythagoras that has consecutive numbers.

I know that much lol.

But how would you apply it to this situation? Surely after gauging you would put down some battens and get your right angle this way? Or am I just not seeing this as a difficult situation?

Do you use a chalk line ? its done with a tape and a pencil and a chalk line

as above but use slow set for around the breakfast bar, then if the tiles don't quite meet you can adjust the tiles
