Tiling in a flat

Afternoon all,

One of my mates wants me to tile his sisters bathroom floor .... no problem .... except she is in a high rise flat !

How do you go about doing cuts ??

Is it worth getting one of those little cheap cutters with its own water recycling system on it and be careful not to soak the place ?.... or is there a better way ?!?

you best make sure you are allowed to tile the floor 1st as sometimes it is not allowed due to noise transmitting through the floor.

You will only have a few cuts wont you? Or are you tiling around the loo and pedestal? Its not something I have ever done nor would I want to.

If I did HAVE to though I'd definatly take out the pan and ped. I personally think it looks cack to cut around the sanitaryware! Moreover it would keep the cutting to a minimum.

I'm assuming you're using a dry manual cutter for a majority of cuts. After that you shouldn't need a saw for much and if you keep the water level to the minimum there's virtually no overspray.

Yeah should be fine to tile it, its a concrete base that had tiles on previously.

Will try and avoid as much hassle as possible, just a few wet cuts for pipes and the door frame, (will use my dry cutter as much as pos!) , just wondered how people got round not being able to use their wet cutter (mine pumps out the water and would make a mess!!)

I just send the apprentice down the stairs to keep him fit and do the cuts out side........... You could just run your cutter dry and hold a damp sponge against the blade, works great if you only have a few cuts to do.

thats why it pays to find a good cutter that doesnt do this.

When I did bathrooms I had a little Briccolina and did nearly all my wet cuts in the room. Very clean little machine as the blade only projected about 15mm above the work surface which is enough for most ceramics.

I use a small wet cutter and only realy get the spray on my face. Unfortnatly I tend to look like one of these fellas after cutting ceramics!

Our tiler did ALL his work on this little kit and he installed 600 x 300 porcelain tiles.

The unit didnt take up a big footprint but its quite noisy.

He did a good job

I've had a job like this at the hub at Milton Keynes, I set up my cutter in the car park downstairs, I templated all the cuts around the toilet/basin/architraves and took those down in the lift with me with enough tiles and cut them all at the same time in the underground car park. I only had to make the 1 trip down to cut them, then another to mix up addy. You'll need to lay the floor out dry first though so you can get it all cut exactly.

Years ago, before I had the Dewalt saw, I did a job like this. I laid it all out and then marked up the cuts and took them with me to the other job where we had to saw. It was a bit of a hassle, but better than trying to fight with it on-site.

I often have jobs in flats, and dont have a problem using my Plasplugs mastertiler cutter, its not messy although a bit noisy. To stop tiny bits of tile flying everywhere I put masking tape over the line to be cut. Bods often make the mistake of putting too much water in the cutter and it goes everywhere.
