tiling in berlin

Hi all i am in berlin at the moment on holidays and i must report that the tiling in the subway stations is stunning. I am going around the place in total awe of the workmanship.

Think it might be occupational hazard checking out tiling, when i was doing a ceramics degree (as mature student) i travelled around looking at the birthplace of geometric tiling like morrocco and other places turkey middle east, went to Pompei was allowed to see the naughty mosaics the romans were brilliant but quite debauched :yikes:

Saw some bad stuff in Canada years ago shopping plaza tiles were supposed to all meet in a tapered star in the middle but they didn't so they put damn big planters over the dodgy sections but you could still see them was funny.

Murf, just yesterday I received a packet mailed by my buddy in Germany...he's stationed in Berlin at the moment, and he sent to me some catalogs of tile and kithen and bath products from German showrooms. It was interesting to see the photos of what is popular and selling in Germany now.

i worked in berlin mid 1990s. got to admit i hate the place.
worked all over germany , and berlin was by far the worst place in germany.
although i enjoyed the high standards expected by box heads.

I know Phil, and the germans think I am a crazy irishman going around taking pictures of walls and floors. I will put up the pics when i get back as they are really spectacular imo.

Here are a couple of pics. unfortunately most of my photography was pretty crappy and did not do justice to the workmanship but from these few you can get a general idea of what a lot of the stations looked like.

nice one John. those pics are amazing. I'm now sitting here wondering whether all that was "designed" before it was fixed or whether somebody did it all free-hand. it would be interesting to find out.

when I did my first tile training at bal they had some fantastic tile murals on the wall , they were copies of the 50s railway posters

I realised then that we underuse tile in this country and dont see it as decorative finish which is a shame

with a bit more imagination we could live in a very decorative world
