i will be fitting a new kitchen shortly and just wanted to make sure of a couple of things.
The floor is a wooden floor so am i right in saying it needs overboarding in 12mm ply and also to use a flexible adhesive? And which adhesives and grout would you guys reccomend?
Also, do i tille slightly under kickboards and end panels of base units or just tile up to them thanks.

welcome to the forum first off.
Do you have enough room under your work top for your ply and tiles?
12mm ply will be ok but floor needs to be checked first that it is properly screwed down and the ply wants to be a good quality ply, you can get some rubbish if you are not careful. (I always go overboard screwing it down too, use screws that don't pass through the floorboards! for obvious reasons)
Adhesives and grout wise, Mapei Keraquick and Ultra colour plus plus for me.

As you are fitting a new kitchen take into account the extra height that you will need for the ply and the tiles! kitchen units are normally installed at 870mm from floor or 910mm including worktop if using a 40mm work top!
I would add on 12mm for ply and 10mm for tile if its this thick? and then say 5mm for adhesive and this will give you enough clearence for your appliances to slide back under the counter tops.
As long as the wooden floor you have got is solid (no bounce/deflection etc) then 12mm ply will be fine!(if its a wooden floating floor then this is totally different!!!!)
Firstly make sure the existing wooden floor is securely fixed, then i would use WBP ply or similiar marine grade say, i would seal the back and edges and then screw it down to the floor at a minimun of 300mm centres 200mm centres for extra piece of mind!
I would use a single part flexible adhesive to lay the tiles with! Look on the bag to see if the face of the ply needs sealing first! Some adhesive manufacturers recommend it and some dont! If it needs sealing use an acrylic primer! NOT PVA!!! I would then grout it with a flexible grout as well!!
I would tile the floor upto the kitchen unit feet and then fitt the kick boards/plynths afterwards this will give you a lot better finish and if you have to remove the plynths at a later stage it will be easier to do so!
Hope this helps
p.s mapei, bal, are the better adhesives depends what the tile shop has in stock.

hi guys thanks for all your replies. I forgot to mention that all my appliances, fridge freezer and dishwasher will all be integrated, so im not sure whether that makea a difference. So, i need to make sure my kitchen units are about 897mm frm floor to the top of the unit?
I would still fitt kitchen units 870mm from finished floor level your dishwasher/w,machine will have a facia door on the front i presume and the fridge/freezer will be mounted in a tall unit and the oven will either be fitted in a unit or on a metal rail fitted between two units.
if in doubt the fitting instructions for your appliances will tell you how much clearences you need!

[/As Div siad id go for 6mm hardibacker everytime as the problems with ply are 12mm + addy and tile can bring you up an inch at every threshold! i now hardibacker everything when theres floorboardsQUOTE]

are you sure?? as most posts on this forum go with 12mm ply?

Hairy, it really is up to you how you proceed and as youl appreciate different tilers have different, preferences on many things i was just saying that i prefer hardibacker to ply! it is dearer but it is also half the thickness so you have less issues at door thresholds, and if installed correctly just as strong as 12mm ply!
