tiling on black bitumen

Hi I appreciate this has been asked before but I've removed vinyl tiles and as much of the black adhesive below and I'm wondering what I need to do now. Should I prime it with a normal primer or something like bal bond sBR? Do I brush them on neat or add water to them?

Any advice appreciated

Personally I would screw down 6mm backer board. Not much adheres to bitumen.

Chalker, this wouldn't solve any issues and surely there would be voids under the boards. Fitting backer boards is more time consuming, unnecessary and costly

can you slurry adhesive? im under the impression a slurry coat is a very watery mix? sorry if im wrong. cheers

My apologies for the very delayed response but was on holiday. Thank you very much for all your help and advice. I have keraquik rapid set flexible s1 adhesive. Having read the data sheet I'm not clear whether it would work on bitumen. Would it be ok if I added the latex plus? If I have to do a slurry coat what do I add the sbr with and at what consistency?

my advise is get an abrasive machine from hire centre and remove all of the bitumen completely, then prime with either primer G or eco prim T from Mapei. you'll probably be as well to put a layer of self levelling over the floor then like ultraplan renovation screed before tiling.

Why do you say this tilerbarry? Keraquick is an ideal adhesive to use in a slurry coat with SBR. The discussion has been centred around slurry coats, not tiling straight onto the bitumen. I would advise you save your money and efforts in creating a smelly messy bitumen free floor and stick with the slurry coat or Eco prim


To stevie12345....... mix a slurry of keraquick and SBR. Just use SBR instead of water to a runny mix and roller on

I used Mapei technical a few weeks ago & they advised me that & I quote;
"You don't have to worry about 75% rh for a Gyvlon screed if your tiling onto it"
"The 75% rh is only for other floor coverings"

I would take their advice with a pinch of salt.

Flooring grade asphalt/bitumen can be tiled on ..

You should mix the flexible adhesive directly into the sbr. I usually pour up to one inch in the bottom of the bucket (not too much) you can always mix more. Then add the flexible adhesive powder to a consitancy that you can brush around the floor easily. I would also suggest that as soon as the slurry is mixed pour it all out streight away, if you don't do this the sand in the powder will settle to the bottom of the bucket & you will end up just pouring out sbr! If you mix it too thin you can always throw dry powder on to the floor just brush it in until the powder is mixed. Cover the floor evenly.

I have the same problem just pulled up a load of floor tiles to find they where stuck to old parquet flooring and left a bitumen coat underneath, the general consensus is a slurry coat of adhesive to go over the top of it

Weber do a primer specifically for this,can't remember the name but have used it without any issues.
