Tiling on bonding..

I was always told NEVER tile on a bonding coat, but i know people that do it all the time, and never seem to get any problems!?! What is the reason for not tiling it? I thought it was too soft/unstable, yet it's the strength in a plaster wall!?!
What's your understanding???

It's an undercoat for finish!
As you say to unstable and chalky I've never tiled onto bonding! Only the cowboys do that IMO

Is it just a numbers game then? For all these people that tile on it, and get no comebacks, there are gonna be some out there failing... Just never seem to hear about the fails!?!

You should really only go with what the manufacturers of adhesive being used and the plaster used. British Gypsum state it is not a suitable surface to directly tile on.
You dont usually hear of failures from tilers, well who would shout about it ??
The choice is yours.

That's true enough I guess. I wasn't saying that I was going to tile on bonding, just that people do... With so many people out there doing things incorrectly, it's practically impossible to compete on price.

yes mate but I suppose if you explain the correct procedure.... they take it on board and would rather have someone do it for cheaper but incorrectly surely they will eat there words in the near future.

Bonding was a course undercoat but the receipe has changed and it feels like it's been mixed with browning, far to soft to tile to....

It's ok if you pva it first, then dot/dab with fix n grout. :smilewinkgrin:

I wonder if there is a surface tensile strength figure for bonding. Maybe then a gypsum based tile adhesive would work ok.... Not that I would advocate it...

Always worth looking at other avenues. It's strong enough to hold plasterboard up, although not as strong as plasterboard adhesive granted.

Why would you put plasterboard on bonding?

can't say I know any tillers that tile on to bonding.....know loads of plasterers that think it's ok to do, but that's plasterers for you....lol

With a back ground as a plasterer I would'nt entertain it personally....

I prefer the plasterboard adhesive personally too. You can definitely tell the difference when ripping out. The adhesive generally takes the block work with it lol!

When we 1st started drylining,about 88, we used bonding , not sure why,possibly cheaper my boss was a yorkshireman, tight git.
But i agree with a post you made before, it is no where near as sticky as it used to be.

Plasterer by trade and i do this. Never once has it failed and i even done it on a few reveales in my own house i built 10 years ago and not one of them came loose. Its common practice for plasterers to put plasterbaord on with bonding, well it is anyway here in cork in ireland. Also worked on plenty jobs throughout the country and even foremen told us to do it. There is many ways to skim a cat

Agree that plasterbord adhesive is better but you can get away with using bonding.

I can not understand the comparison here.... Bonding works, and plasterboard adhesive works.... Why therefore is plasteboard adhesive better?? They both work...
