Tiling on Flagstones

Recently asked to go and look at a porch which has flagstones that seem to be soild and about 2foot by 3foot in size.

My thoughts are to prime, lay SLC put down Dural to alow small amount of movement if it occours(to be safe) and then lay using Keraflex with flexible grout.

Any one have experience of tis type of job as Ive not and as aloways want to do a good job.

Would it not be poss to remove flags, and lay a good foundation

As above, best way would be to rip out and start from scratch. If thats an option?

They are very large, I said i wasnt willing to tile over them as there could still be movement and wasnt 100% sure of there state. customer said hes willing to take responsability and accept liability if the tiling fails and that i was to ile and do the best I could so thats why I was thinking of the process above.

Whats under the slabs? I will hazard a guess at a soil/sand base. This would be one that I would be walking away from, you might be opening a can of worms if you proceed because no doubt the slabs will move over time and you will get the blame for the ruined tiles.

Bit of a dodge area that, do a search on tiling on tiles. There are loads of threads about this and loads of opinions. Its easy to say dont do it but Im going to assume that you need the work.

Have you worked for this customer before? Just be aware that if the floor does fail then it is your responsibility as the tiler.

As a fixer you are responsible to make sure the surfaces are suitable to tile onto, in this case its not so be very careful.

Ah all good advice and I knew thats what you were going to say. Ive done a lot of work for this customer as hes just renovated a 4 story bock of offices/flats so kitchens and bathroms have been done throughout. Ive a feeling that it will be a sand mix under stone just due to the age of the building. The work is handy and like i said hes happy to take liability BUT I still would hate the tiles to fail knowing I laid them.

But its what to do if he says Im taking responsability and want you to do it???

Hi Davie, this is a bit lke tile on tile. There are products on the market that claim to be suitable, but the gray area is always how well are the existing tiles bonded?. The same for the flags imo, good luck with your decision

imo i would walk away unless the flags are replaced with a suitable foundation, its your reputation not his
