Tiling on MDF

am tiling a panel of MDF , so far cannot find an adhesive which will hold the tiles - any advice:huh2:

What thickness is the tile ?, and what adhesive have you tried using so far.

MDF will also soak up moisture in the air so tiled MDF in a bathroom might not be a good idea anyway.

Tile thickness is 5mm, adhesive used is standard waterproof tile adhesive n, finished off with waterproof grout.

Sorry, but there is no such thing as waterproof adhesive and grout for starters, just different grades of water resistance as water will slowly make its way through anything given time and exposure to water.

What make and name was the adhesive that you have already used ?

I wouldn't tile onto MDF in the first place, and certainly not in a bathroom or anywhere it might come into contact with damp

what if you tank the mdf. would that help

It's better to use either backerboards or reinforced extruded polystyrene boards for panels. I wouldn't risk using MDF, as it can swell several percent if it gets damp, which might delaminate the tiles. Even moisture resistant MDF can't be counted on to not swell, eventually.

Bear in mind that waterproofing compunds are normally water based and soluable before they dry, and you'd have to tank both sides of the mdf board, which might seal moisture in the panel, which might cause swelling.

I'd use a reinforced extruded polystyrene board. They're not all that expensive, and they're easy to work with.

MDF not difficult in itself to fix to, if the surface is roughened a little, with a decent quality adhesive

BUT

problem is that MDF is not dimensionally stable in changing moisture and thermal conditions. so the likelihood of problems developing is enhanced.
