Was planning to batten and use backer boards on a new thermolite block wall for a shower. But😳haven't left myself enough room to fit the tray and door and so want to know if I can tile direct onto the blocks, which are level, or screw ply or equivalent direct to the wall and tile on that. I understand backer boards require a timber / steel frame. What is the best way to prepare / seal / waterproof the blocks if I tile direct? I'm only talking about an area of 1.6sq m and so don't want to buy a shed load of gear for that small area so any recommendations for small quantity products? Cheers!

I don't think thermalite blocks are the best things to screw into anyway as they can have a tendancy to crumble if the correct plugs are not used.

I suspect that they are not suitable for Thermalite FreeD.

Would'nt put tiles onto thermolite, you can get to much movement which increases the chance of cracking

Some great advice - thinking I'll go for the dot and dab plasterboard option (possibly using the alternative fixing method) on the blocks plus plasterboard on the other two studded walls and then tank the lot. Sound good?
