Tiling onto 6mm ply

The amount of time this company has been is business means nothing apart from they have done it wrong for that length of time..

The ply will just warp with moisture from the adhesive and as it is screwed down to the floor boards it will not be able to hold strength in the hollow sections of the floor boards, hence the use for a thicker ply or backer boards as backer boards are also laid onto a bed of adhesive that fills these said voids.

IMO it is fixer error and will only get worse as said floor is used..

Thanks Dave. We'll challenge the fact that 6mm ply has been used. When the tilers come back, I'll come back on line with an update. I would really appeciate it if we could get a recommendation for a good tiler in the Thame area, we've got more tiling ahead of us in other areas of our house!

No probs.. give me shout when you require i tiler and i will try and source one for you..

Good luck confronting your tiler over this floor.

Just to add my tuppence. It's all very well screwing floorboards down to the joists but there's usually about 18" between the joists unsupported ( so cannot be screwed to anything) and with the natural warpage of floorboards (known as peaking when the tongue and groove rise higher than the centre of the board) there will always be some movement.

If you lift any carpet laid over floorboards you'll find it's very rarely dead flat with warpage and even then it isn't constant as floorboards will move ( albeit slightly) with temperature or moisture variation. With peaking along with natural shrinkage the tongue and groove isn't as tight as it would have been when laid giving more scope for movement. I just wanted to give my opinioned explanation as to why using 6mm ply to prep over floorboards is woefully inadequate.

hi in 2009 i replaced my damaged mdf floor , put a new one down in bathroom and kitchen.
i used 6mm ply to tile onto , screwed it down every few inches and so far to this day the floor is perfect (apart from a few cracked tiles in kitchen but thats due to her dad not putting enough adhesive on and leaving spacers under it), but apart from that the bathroom, hall and kitchen is perfect, no tiles lifting , make sure he treats the floor then uses marine ply and screw the sucker down hard and tight every few inches or so, the only think i wish i did was make a hatch to get under the floor and installed under tile heating , hope this helps

that is more luck than judgment m8. the fact there are cracks in the floor means the installation has failed and if you use 6mm ply you are a mug.

is this the same job that your posted on looking for tiles as thay have started cracking?

my guess is you may have unuderlying issues down tot the 6mm ply mate
