Tiling onto brick

Hi all.

Just got a job in a power station there converting an old room in to toilets. 35 sq m
Job is straight forward 6 inch ceramic onto brick walls. Can i just put adhesive straight on to the painted brick or would i have to prime it first. thanx lads.

Going by Bal's product sheets for Whitestar it does say...

Suitable for use in dry and wet duty locations including heavy duty commercial applications such as communal showers and commercial kitchens. Ideal for use on a variety of backgrounds including cement:sand rendering, plaster, plasterboard, paint, sheets and boards, tilebacker panels and existing ceramic tiles.

...so paint is listed, even though most do recommend removing as much paint as possible before tiling.

Personally I would rough up the paint with a wire brush as much as possible first, then use an acrylic primer as it dries tacky giving extra sticking power then something along the lines of Bal's Whitestar adhesive.

The bond strenght of any paint may well be the weakest link. Epoxy paint on floors and gloss paint on walls are usually strong enough but emulsion paint must be removed mechanically, (no chemicals). Try putting a strip of gaffer tape on the wall leave for 5 mins and then slowly peel off if the paint comes away you will have to remove as much as you can and then score with wire brush, hope this helps

I'm glad you brought this up as next week i've got a job on in a toilet, 7x3 ft, just the WC in there but the walls have backing paper on thats been painted over a number of years i've been told!
i told them to remove it if possible but if they can't / don't wot would be the best solution?
would i score it or something else??

If it's still got backing paper on then I'd strip the lot off.
