Tiling onto cement render

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum!

I have just gutted my bathroom in a 150 year old victorian house and part of the prep was to ready up for a double glazed window. On taking out the window it showed how bad the inch thick plaster was on one of the external walls and I have now removed it entirely exposing the bricks. I have been advised to cement render over the brick work which is quite un even to flatten it and then tile straight on to the cement.

Is this the right thing to do? I should mention the tiles are quite thick I think 12mm and then 300by600mm.

Is the wall a solid one or is there a cavity between the brick work.

sand and cement rendered walls are far and away the best surface to tile on

just make sure you allow enough drying time before tiling

my option would be sand/cement render but the downside is the drying time, but i'm also guessing those tiles would be too heavy for plasterboard.

Ceramics are about 30kg m2 at 12mm thick, then allow 3kg for adhesive

Thanks Guys its Victorian so minimal cavity in the middle! How long is the drying time for the cement render?

Mark, Gary, does anyone use accelerators for renders?

dont know of any accelarators but its a 2 week curing time.

Weber may do a quick drying ready mixed render suitable for this which you would only need to add water to. Also have you considered browning? Sovereign would suggest a tanking solution for the brick followed by their universal one-coat plaster but I'd need to check on the tiling weight issue before confirming its going to be suitable

Thanks everyone I appreciate your advice! The other solution here is to render the bricks for strength and to level the wall up (Victorian brick work lasts but is massively pissed), then plasterboard and tile onto the flat plaster board? If I do this what precautions do I need to take?
