tiling onto flexible wood floor. Advice please!

Hi everyone, just got my 1st job tiling a bathroom. The walls i havent got a problem with, but could use some advice on the floor. The floor has only been boarded in 6mm ply for a start and is causing me concern. The tiles are 300mm x 600mm porcelain. What is th best addy to use for that? Was thinking of using standard spf. Also what would be the best trowel to use for this? Sorry if these questions sound a bit dumb but i thought it best to call on you experienced guys for help!

As long as the floor is sound, then use a spf but make sure its porcelbond, also use flexible grout, i use a 10mm trowel.

Even if the floor was rigid, which i don't think this one is going by the thread title, SPF should not be used onto a 6mm ply overlay.

BAL FastFlex, 2 part adhesive, should be used on any ply overlay under 18mm.
But only then if the floor is free from any deflection, and the overlay is being used to only smooth the floor.

As for grout, wide joint grout with GT1, 1:1 with water, would be the recommended grout rather than Superflex WJ, or the like

You must have porcelbond in the adhesive for it to stick to the porcelain.

Standard cement based adhesive when used with ceramic, get absorbed into the ceramic enough for it to hold.
But as porcelain is non-porous, the cement cannot bind to it like it does with ceramic.
That is where the porcelbond comes in. These polymers act basically as a glue, that hold the cement to the porcelain.

The only time you could, would be if it was a totally rigig T&G floor onto joists at 300mm centres, with noggins also at 300mm centres. And you were using BAL FastFlex.
Then basically the ply is only being used to smooth, rather than strengthen.

I'm with James on this one. Most customers are put off when you say to them you have to lay 18mm ply coz of the step up from the adjoining room but it's the only guarantee. If they don't want the step then it's 2 part flexi. Good luck with your 1st job mate

right guys 6mm ply is ok if floor is solid with no movement , adhesive shoild be webber ripid set with a admix AD250 ,its the same as timeberflex =39 pounds
,ripidset with the ad 250 =27 pounds for a 25 kg bag , I have used it and it is great to work with

no i don't think so when you tile one side of ply it is unequal laminates and 6mm would dlaminate unless you stick it down with adhesive and screw it then tile on top but has to be solid as a rock

Yeah, it probably is so thin that you would either need to stick it aswell as screw it. Or screw it every 100mm or so.
Not very practicle, is it?

But, if all that was done, seeing as an unplyed T&G floor (with the correct spaced joists and noggins) is stable enough, then I don't see why that wouldn't be stable enough.

Not much chance of getting all of that in place though.

you stick it down with adhesive and screw it then tile on top the ply that is not the customer lol
