tiling onto wooden outdoor balcony

tiling onto a wooden balcony, is it ok to tile directly onto ( 18mm ply) or should anything else be done as it's outdoor?

Definately requires more preperation! And to what extent depends on the drainage.
balconies can be problematic if prep is insufficient. I have used schluter troba, bekotec, screed then ditra drain. Very successfully on balconies. Check out their website and a very helpful technical department to decide which system is best suited to your application.
But whatever you do, do not waste your time money and effort tili g Ono the ply directly I can almost guarantee failure

thanks Andrew, what if i was to treat it as wet area and tank it or sheet it with hardie backer would that work?
