Discuss Tiling Over Sheeted Floor in the Canada Tile Advice area at TilersForums.com.

After a little advise that I'm sure will be very simple for you guys.
So my other half has decided that she wants her kitchen revamped including the floor being tiled. The make up of the floor is standard joists with 8 x 4 sheets of t&g plywood fixed on top. When we moved into the house about 17 years ago there was a tiled floor in situ in the kitchen but they were all loose and lifted very easily. Since then we have had a laminate flooring down which there have been no issues with. What I really want to know is can you tile over a joisted ply covered floor given the natural flexing of the floor?

You've answered your own question there... The tiles were loose and came up easily when you moved in.
Had that issue with a conservatory recently and only way that could be successfully tiled was to remove floor back to joists then screw noggins and posts in tight to the concrete base underneath, replace caber floor, staggered joints, glued and screwed, then 6mil hardi over that before tiles...deflection totally eliminated

Thanks for that. Basically what I thought. The joists in my case are suspended at least 750mm above the sub floor which if I can remember correctly is not solid anyway. Suppose I'll have to convince the Mrs to pick another laminate or timber type of flooring.

Thanks Andy that looks very promising.
I like the new stuff, suggested it to a customer only other day that had an untileable floor...answer I got was "we're too young for that vinyl stuff" :) pah!!
Half tempted on doing a karndean training course for all these bouncy and floating floors I'm coming across lately..
