tiling straight onto brick?

hello everyone. I am glad to be here! :smilewinkgrin:
Can anyone tell me whether it's feasible to use large ceramic tiles on brickwork? We started to remove things from a bathroom in order to tile it and large amounts of plaster came away. Seems it is all blown and has to be removed. Is there any way I can save time and money by taking off plaster, sanding bricks down, then sealing them to take tiles? My handy-man said this can be done, but he's no plasterer!!

Large format tiles require a flat surface to make a good job. I would be inclined to dot n dab plasterboard on the walls and tile onto that.

As Grumps says for me too. It would be a lot quicker and safer this way.

Seal the walls skim with tile adhesive and tile, the skim coat of (bagged adhesive) should give you a better surface than the brick itself, let it dry well before tiling, just make sure the adhesive is up to the job.

PS: This is just another option, if you are not confident you'd get it flat enough i'd go for the dot n dab option.

It would be cheaper to PB D&D the wall IMO..

I would cover the brick with something and you will find it easier to get the walls flat and true with a board.

wow, thank you! That is a lot of help, very gratefully received! So - have sacked the 'handy man' and sawn off an arm and a leg to offer a professional (for the tiling). I am so glad for this help; thank you to all who replied. Brilliant!
