Tiling to plasterboard

Hi all,

I'm going to be tiling our bathroom And have had to put in plasterboard due to the old plaster and lave coming away when removing the old tiles. The plasterboard hasn't been skimmed but do I need to use a pva and water mix prior to tiling? I am using a ready mix Mapegrip D2 Wall Tile Adhesive.

Any advice is greatly welcome

Many thanks 300 mm x 200 mm and some mosaic sheets from original style

I personally wouldnt use a ready mix adhesive in a bathroom

I'd save yourself the expense of skimming the plasterboard, deffo not pva, also would use a bagged adhesive as opposed to the tubbed stuff. Have you planned to use tanking membrane in the "wet areas"?

Hi mate and welcome to the forum. As above...PVA is no good with any tiling!! Use a good bagged adhesive and the correct primer to go with it...do it right an do it once. Good luck.

I've already got some Mapegrip D2 Wall Tile Adhesive which was supplied by an independent tile stockists, can I just use this straight on the plasterboard?

can you not swap it for powdered adhesive?

Whether I use a powered or the stuff I have, do I need to treat the plasterboard prior to applying the adhesive?

Hi Lambster. Plasterboard and bathrooms are not a great combination! As you've already discovered, when the plasterboard gets wet, the tiles tend to fall off. I'd strongly suggest you use a waterproof tilebacker board such as Marmox. It will save you being called back next year to repair it. The others are right, a good quality powder adhesive such as Mapei Keraquick (white if you are tiling stone) would be better but Mapegrip D2 is a good product.
P.S. definitely don't use PVA in a bathroom. But you won't need a primer if you use Marmox.

the plasterboard doesn't need to be primed, but if you've broken the paper and bare gypsum is exposed, this does need priming, especially if you use a bagged adhesive.

if "wet areas" are tanked, plasterboard is fine as long as tiles are within safe load bearing limits (imo)
