Hi Lambster. Plasterboard and bathrooms are not a great combination! As you've already discovered, when the plasterboard gets wet, the tiles tend to fall off. I'd strongly suggest you use a waterproof tilebacker board such as Marmox. It will save you being called back next year to repair it. The others are right, a good quality powder adhesive such as Mapei Keraquick (white if you are tiling stone) would be better but Mapegrip D2 is a good product.
P.S. definitely don't use PVA in a bathroom. But you won't need a primer if you use Marmox.

if "wet areas" are tanked, plasterboard is fine as long as tiles are within safe load bearing limits (imo)
