My 1st Job Tiling under bath for panel fitment

Hi,

Your advice please.

I wish to tile part way under a bath so the side/end panels will be in contact with these tiles.

Its a P shaped bath.

The tiles are 9mm, what distance should I allow for with the adhesive and tile so the panels just touches the tiles.

Hi Bob all depends on trowel size. Guessing your using a 10mm or 12mm? I'd allow for around an extra 3mm or so on top of tile depth. Are you not using a Silicon bead around the edge of the bath panel?

I will be putting a Silicon bead between the tiles and the side panels.

For what its worth I laid Hardiebacker board yesterday as the initial flooring was wooden floorboards

As above will be just fine.

Ultimately tho, would be better if you could scribe the panel in after laying the floor in case of any unforeseen problems.

Basically means transferring the outline of your floor to the bottom of your bath panel for a perfect fit.

OK understood, however the bath panels are lipped so i'm reluctant to cut them, ill leave them as built and fill in the gap with a bead of silicon.

No doubt I will be back asking for more advice as I move along.

1. Dry fit bath and mark lines to tile to (up to feet)
2. Lay floor tiles
3. Fix bath at perfect height for panel -sorted!

Lay baton to floor, but raised by the thickness of the panel. So bottom lip of panel slips underneath.

I have the same set up in my bathroom.......silicon won't hold it alone.

If I have to remove the panel a craft knife will slice through the adhesive. Ive used this product many times-its the dogs.

Hi again,

Fitted the bath today, its sitting on wooden battens and wooden uprights, there is absolutely no movement and the levels are spot on. With the bath being supported by the wood I then lowered the five feet to touch the floor.

However a slight issue, with the side panel fitted there is a gap at one end of approx 14 mm and at the other end its 20mm, so obviously the floor isnt level along the length.

How do I overcome this situation, is it permissible to put down excessive adhesive to level the tiles out to be even along the length of the panel?

Yes bob - 6mm will be okay to pack out but you're doing it the hard way! When using bath panels you should tile the floor level first and then fit your bath to desired height to remove all these headaches. In my experience you'll struggle to get it perfect doing it your way.

Another tip is to lay the long row of tiles that go under the main length of the bath first and concentrate on getting them spot on level then lay the rest in respect to them. That way if you do encounter little level problems later (I'm sure you won't) it means you can still fit the bath bang on level at your desired height

Any single part flexi addy will be fine for laying on Hardi. You just need to decide on rapid or slowest, grey or white.

Having never tiled before this tiling lark is a big learning curve for me, I did as suggested by macten and removed the bath and laid the first row of tiles along the panel length and tiled out from that. The result although not perfect is acceptable in my opinion. Thanks for your help with this.

Ive attached a pic of the walls that I will be tiling next, all of the wall is rock solid apart from a small bit up by the ceiling, Im reluctant to overly remove this bit as it will disturb the newly installed overboarded artex ceiling. Any suggestions about this please.

Intend tanking in the bath tomorrow, any pitfalls with this that I should know about?

What white grout would you suggest I use on the floor tiles, read on this forum that white can become grey--

The blue tiles are staying and I will over tile them, not sure what they were attached with but they are welded on, I intend using Mapei Eco prim grip.

Never used white grout on a floor and never will!

Fair enough, what colour would you use then?

Wow, looks like the old tiles were fixed with contact adhesive.
Gray grout on floor.
Bossed plaster,remove.
May have to provide key and primer on painted sections.

Sorry to go missing for a while-

Here's the final result, I learnt lots by my mistakes, biggest f up was my drilling the tap holes in the wrong place-aagghhh- went to the pub after this and got myself quite irate over such a silly mistake,- made up some ss washers and had them chrome plated, best i could do really.

Not exactly my choice of tile but it keeps the supervisor happy.

Having never tiled or fitted a bathroom before im happy with the end result, thankfully, so is the boss.
