Tiling wall, cable protruding from wall

Tilers Forums Official Sponsors

Hello folks, I just finished installing my base and wall units and now need to tile the kitchen. I'm using 10cm x 20cm metro tiles, and will tile up to the bottom of the wall units (so about 60cm up from the worktop, which I am fitting first).

I thought about this and realised that a lighting cable, which I need for later, is sticking out the wall. Do I drill a 20mm hole in the ceramic metro tile and just pop the cable through it? Or maybe I should insert a rubber grommet in the hole and then push the cable through that?

Any advice appreciated.

Oh and, yes, the walls have been painted in white water based paint 🙁 , I will be scrubbing all that off back to bare plaster, then applying some Mapei Primer G (diluted 1:1) prior to any tiling. I thought I'd go with glass splashback, but it turned out to be very expensive, so chose to tile.

Is that the final position you need for that cable to come out the wall?

To be honest, it probably could have been a little higher, in line with the bottom of that wall unit, but at the time I didn't know what wall units I was having so it will pretty much stay there, yes.
