Had a phone call (2) of which I missed. Then I receive a text saying...

Do u want the boys to pva all the ply, if so 50/50 solution ok?


i rang back in a flash and explained a few things such as I never tile onto ply on a floor. The next thing shocked me as they said it was a wall!!! I then asked if it was a repair job. Yes was the reply and then it clicked for him, the reason the repair has occurred was due to the fact it was all done in ply!!! In a wet area. I'll not mention who it is but needless to say I will be sitting down and educating them tomorrow!!!

The problem is this IMO. Ive seen though here the (possible) problems that could occur using pva,ply,chipboard etc. Ive lost work in the past because builders wont use "safer" products. Untill it becomes law or these builders have plenty of failures it is not going to change. As long as the vast majority of the "old" methods are still fit for purpose Im still going to be told " we have always used pva & ply/plasterboard in shower areas".

I tile on ply a fair bit but if I didn't then I'd be sitting in the house with mortgage arrears. Gotta dance with the devil sometimes to make ends meet.

I tile on ply on the floor , must be fixed ie over joists etc , and use fast flex. Walls I try to avoid but will do if needs be.

Saw some guys hanging 1" thick marble on ply very recently , have to they seemed pretty confident about it , I think the adhesive was Nicobond which I haven't seen for years myself.

Did you give them a lesson in not to ever use pva in wet areas or for tiling substrates Cam?

When I was young and with the correct adhesive prepared properly, plywood was a suitable waterproof substrate in all wet areas and floors. Even today the major adhesive manufacturers make adhesive for plywood underlay.
Obviously technology has brought better substrates and we move on, but remember 30 years of building practice is not all wrong.

Agree, if it's properly prepared and using the correct adhesives, it's still possible to successfully tile to ply. There's more ideal systems now but just because it's ply doesn't mean that the tiles will fall off in 3 months.

I've done loads of commercial jobs directly onto ply, if I didn't someone else would! Mostly floors, a few walls, wouldn't do it in a wet area though.

I think the problem we have with ply now is that it's getting shipped from China cheap as chips & to be honest most of it is garbage.
Most of it delaminates & as stated we now have a lot better materials to work with..
