I know I am repeating myself, but make a staff, PTS must have covered this. A staff or pinch rod/ gauging stick, is basically a piece of timber you mark your tile joints on inc spacers. Using this you predetermine where your cuts fall. Hope this helps:thumbsup:

can i raise a point here ? , i aint been on any tiling courses , i suspect i never will , one of the first things that crossed my mind was to make a gauging stick to see where cuts are going to be , should the course have not taught the OP this as a basic bit of training :mad2:

Paul if you are an enthusiastic amateur then the chances are that you may one day need a course or you will get the help from this forum, either way I dont think that it helps when you state the obvious regarding staffs/measuring sticks etc, if he wasn't shown how to mark out then we will help him. If he did know about gauging etc then he would not have asked. Many people ask really basic questions on the forum and we keep answering all the time, they are basic to us, not the question asker. There are professional tilers on here that also ask for advice, there are no silly questions.

i think my point may have been mistook , i agree there are no silly questions , and i will admit that i have been very impressed by the help i have been given so far , it just seemed that in my opinion a gauging stick is a simple thing that should be a cornerstone of the tiling trade and therefore one of the things that a ( paid for presumably ) tiling course should teach :)

Good courses and bad courses.
After 20 years tiling I have picked up many good tips from the fellas on here. Sometimes a new question asker may have plucked up the courage to actually ask the question in the first place, we don't want them to log off in a few minutes thinking they are asking something basic. Its only basic if you know how to do it.

I went on a 6 week course at alpine, you dont need a stick, i work mine out on the wall allowing for joint, it works ok for me

cool , it is probably easier if i back out of this , one last comment though , i made myself a stick to help me visualise where cuts are going to be , saved a lot of time marking walls and then getting confussed about which marks to work from and to :)

thanks diamond tiling would like to be shown properly, the gage rod is basic and im shure it wont be spot on for getting an appearance of a full tile i just want to grasp it and have good results and happy customers and slowly build my tile career through the year..thanks again diamond tiling for a common sense reply...cheers

Cripo,

If you did your course at Harlow, it's possible that you are not too far from me; I'm in Haverhill, near Cambridge.

If you want some assistance with setting out, you can PM me and we'll arrange some time where you can meet me on a job and I will provide as many free lessons as you require.

The advice above is very good but sometimes putting it into practice needs some hand holding.

Either way, good luck mate.

Daz
