Previous owner was the MD of a kitchen firm and travelled the width of the country a few times a week. Luckily been maintained regardless of cost and is in near mint condition. Had new clutch & gearbox just before I bought it, but had been free of problems when this thread started only for handbrake cable to snap an hour after my initial post!!!!

Just scrapped my 03 transit last week, failed its MOT on a shopping list of problems mainly rust related!

That's transits for you:lol:

Both front sills were rotten through and both suspension mountings on the back were and I quote "very very dangerous". it only cost me £1500 and lasted a year, can't see the point of spending a lot on a work van personally, they are only storage containers on wheels!

I agree I don't spend too much on my vans either. My one now it's the dearest one I've bought. That said it is the only tool that gets you and your kit to and from the job so it has to be reliable.

I like to make sure it's safe too.......I take my daughters to school in it. Dangerous suspension parts and throw away vans don't fill me with confidence

It's an image as well, I wouldn't want potential customers to see me driving around in a shed.

I agree Bri. Nearly every customer of mine has passed positive comments about my vehicles. Only last week I was at a job when the plasterer pulled up onto the block paved driveway. The homeowner took all of 2 minutes to tell him to park it on the road for fear of dripping oil onto the paving! Meanwhile a sat in my van (on the drive) eating lunch and drinking cold drinks supplied by the client :)

Definitely, if you drive a smart clean van it shows that you care about your appearance and that will reflect in the quality of your work. A smart clean van doesn't have to be expensive either, I reckon I could find a decent van for around the 3 grand mark.

It depends on how you look after your van.

I have seen all makes look like rust buckets after 8 yrs and then the same look like new when looked after.

Wash them you lazy gits :)

Hit the nail on the head there Dave, If they are well looked after early on the bodywork can stay clean for a long time but once the rust sets in its game over.

I have thought about what my vans look like but customers don't seem to care because we are all well presented, polite and keep our work area clean and the vans aren't complete rust buckets, just a bit tired round the edges

See, that van to me looks tatty and unprofessional. That's not to say it is a true reflection on your skills or workmanship Amtek, but I personally would be embarrassed turning up to a customer in that and worried what they thought of me based on first impressions. No offence intended, and I do have OCD, but that just wouldn't do for me.
