to use or not to use expansion joints?

Hi everyone

I have just read all that stuff Dave posted on expansion joints and was wondering if you guys have encountered any domestic type situations requiring them.If so how do you make them aesthetically pleasing and how did you decide where to put them.I have never used expansion joints but would like to if it improves the job quality.

You can also use what is called a Cold expansion joint.. basicly it is a silicone joint and the same colour as the grout.. less obtrusive and ideal for domestic situations.

Yeah I wouldnt want to tell a customer they need an expansion joint running through there kitchen floor rrr:

Had to ones with different materials, wood and screed in doorways with a coloured trim, you would,nt notice

Ok thanks Dave,would you just choose a spot in the middle of the floor?Do you actually use them as standard?

It depends on the installation.. as a rule most floors will be fine.. but at different substrate transitions then it is a necessity in 99% of cases.

If in screed UFH is used and length of the room exceeds the BS standard before one needs to be used then again use one...

It is all in the job.. if in doubt ask..
