TOP TIPS: Tiling a Shower
Top Tips for tiling a shower
1) Choose a substrate that will not degrade in the presence of water. Ideal substratesare render (sand:cement) or tile backer boards, specifically marketed for use inareas of high humidity.
2) Ensure all substrates are sound, cured, dry and free from any surface contamination. Render should be allowed to cure for a minimum of 2 weeks and board substrates must beinstalled in such a way as to provide a firm, stable base for tiling.
3) Asan alternative to standard render, Mapei Planitop Fast 330 is pre-blended requiring mixing with water only and is ready to receive finishes after 2 – 4hours.
4) Apply a waterproof membrane to the selected substrate. This will help prevent loss ofwater from the shower and avoid costly leaks.
5) Prime the substrate with Mapei Primer G ensuring that the primer penetrates thesubstrate.
6) ApplyMapei Mapelastic Aquadefense by brush to all internal angles and whilst thecoating is still wet push in Mapei Mapeband waterproof flexible tape into theseareas.
7) Apply Mapei Mapelastic Aquadefense by brush or roller to the remaining areas. Allow to dry for approx. 1 hour, then apply a second coat. The system is ready fortiling after 4 hours.
8) Select tiles that are suitable for use in a wet area.
9) Fix the tiles with a complete layer of adhesive behind the tiles. Don’t leave voidswhere water may lie.
10) With today’s high power showers it isessential to select an adhesive that is appropriate for wet duty conditions. Anadhesive, such as Mapei Keraflex Maxi is very versatile and can be used to fixa wide range of tiles and mosaics.
11) Grouting should be carried out with amaterial capable of withstanding a good soaking. Many grouts, such as MapeiUltracolor Plus have the added advantage of mould protection.
12) Finally to complete the job use a high quality elastic Silicon sealant around the base of the shower tray or bath andany other fittings. It is recommended that all internal vertical corners arealso filled with an elastic sealant to reduce the risk of the joints cracking in these locations. Mapei offer Mapesil AC in a range of colours matched to thegrouts for that professional look.
