Hi.

I have followed this forum with interest over the last few weeks and now have finally set to on my own bathroom. After ripping out the old shower and removing some of the old tiles around the bath I discovered a lot of soft spots in the old plaster, I have taken the two affected walls back to brick and have now fixed 10mm Marmox boards over these using a Flexible Rapidset adhesive. Total area for the 2 wall is circa 12m2, See attached pics for ref.
Pipework for the shower has now been fitted (sunk into wall) and bore hole made for wall mounted bath filler to be mounted. It is now time for me to begin tiling. aggghhh..

I have purchased some value 610 x 406mm Travertine, honed and filled for the job and have a number of questions on where to go from now:
1. I have not screwed the marmox to the brickwork, only used adhesive. Is this necc? as seems extremely secure already. Fixed using circa 8mm flexible adhesive bed using notched trowel evenly over entire area.
2. I want to cover another wall in the bathroom using the travertine, this is currently plaster on brick and painted, The house is circa 130yrs old and when tapped the wall again seems sound with no hollow spots, should I take this back to brick and apply the marmox here too?, It seems everytime I look at the bathroom the costs increase for the project and am really keen to avoid this if at all possible, however dont want the wall to flatpack itself after a week, Some of this wall will be at the end of the bath (its currently the nice lime green one in the pic)

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You are going the right way with using marmox boards as a base for tiling on, get all the prep correct at this crucial stage and you will reap the rewards later. Marmox do specify using a solvent free glue and/or their own specific metal fixings when covering walls, as you have used tile adhesive only I would suggest you re-inforce now with the washers and screws.

Your painted wall is not suitable as a tiling surface so that needs attention now, either remove and replace or overboard with marmox and fix using their specification. You should also either tape the joints and corners or fill with Silicon to prevent any water ingress. My preferred method would be to tape and cover with a tanking compound just for peace of mind.

Keep going, you will be fine as long as you take your time and keep asking questions when you are unsure.
