travertine bathroom

Hi guys

this is my 1st experience with travertine
i am tiling my upstairs bathroom 1.8m x 1.8m completely. The tiles, adhesive, sealer are being delivered next week. The supplier has assured me that it is ok to fix to new plaster as i recently plastered all walls. And he suggests usin acrylic primer on walls and also suggests using 1/4 marine ply for the floor.

Does this sound ok or any tips welcome.

ps on a strict budget as bloody mrs talked me into travertine as oposed to std ceramic

welcome carl, afraid your supplier doesn't know what he's talking about, please read this link regarding the weight issues and 6mm ply is no good what so ever, sorry mate

Hello Carl and welcome..

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but you will find that those tiles are to heavy for your newly skimmed walls and to thin a ply for the floor..

Your supplier should know better..??

Agree with the above, use cement boards on the floor (providing it is stable) as 6mm ply is a big no no.

are the walls stud? if so aquapanel should cope with the weight of tiles unless they are very thick (approx 50kg sqm)

kinda gutted..was hoping plaster walls would be ok
didnt wanna use boards as they cost more than the tiles ive just purchased

Does not matter how small the room is...The plaster will not take the weight, and you could have a failure and a tile could fall from the wall causing injury to someone if it hit them. DO NOT USE ON PLASTER WALLS.

I wonder what quality the adhesive is too. I bet your tiles wont look like the photo either. I know money has changed hands but phone and haggle. Tell them you have spoken to pro tilers and quote british standard weight issues to them, you have been mis sold this product

How do these people get away with it?

Everybody above is right Im afraid, the tiles are to heavy for those walls and 6mm ply should never be used on any floor.

Why retailers have to advise their customers with such bad advice is beyond me, I would be straight on the phone and giving them an ear full, you have been given terrible advice from somebody that should know better :mad2:

I really hope you can sort it out without to much hassle.

Just wanted to add to the above post that there are some really good retailers who give the right advice and sell their customers the right products. That is why it is so annoying when retailers who dont have a clue decide that they should advice people without the foggiest idea what they are on about.

how about bare plasterboard ?
it can take nearly double weight than plaster....would this suffice if screwed appropriately...will have to get cement boards for floor
