Hello

Current Hallway is 18mm tongue and groove chipboard resting on 45mm polystyrene insulation on top of concrete subfloor.

Its all way too bouncy for travertine.

Could I rip out the chipboard floor and old polystyrene insulation and replace with something like a 60mm rigid (eg rocksilk thermal floorslab) insulation.

Is it likely to be rigid enough to tile straight on top?

Or would it be better to lift the floor - add supporting wooden battens to remove the bounce and fix back with screws?

T & G on top of insulation which is on top of a concrete floor? its all back to front, why cant you just tile on the concrete?

There are many flooring products on the market that will allow you to raise the floor by 60mm, SLC's that can be re-inforced with grit sand etc could be laid quite quickly and inexpensively to the desired height, what is the condition of the concrete floor?

Thanks for sharing that Dom. Just goes to show you do learn something new everyday, as I wasn't aware that there were products out there for that purpose. :hurray:

Concrete floor ss dry and very sound

So raising the floor level would be a straight forward operation I presume.
Are you thinking of doing the work yourself or are you looking for someone to do it for you? If its the latter then I know there are many people on the forums that can help you.

i am with diamond on this one,

and wedi do a backerboard 50mm thick,
so you get height, insulation and a perfect tiling substrate to boot!

Best of luck

Dagger.

Well - I have checked with the backerboard folks and I could use 60mm backerboard and fit the travertine on top. Thick backerboards are about £20 for 0.7sq m - and I need 18sq m

I am just investigating the alternative of 1 cu m of concrete to raise the level to roughly the same height and will apply a SLC for the last 5mm (to minimise drying time)

Thanks for everyone's help

18m2 of sand and cement @ 60mm = £800 ish installed by a pro inc mats,
£550ish of boards installed by you inc mats.

you pays yer money, you takes your choices..oh and no drying time with backerboards, bonus added insulation etc.

diamond will do it for you, your not too far away are you?
