travertine floor help pls

Hi guys,

I've registered on here to ask for your help.

I've recently had a travertine floor laid and 2 wks later large holes have started to appear through out. I bought the tiles independently and had a professional tiler lay them.

I've since found out that travertine does have holes which need to be filled with filler which we did for the first couple now there are around 50 50 pence piece size holes. The company have said they will replace the tiles but not pay for the re laying, up take or removal of the original tiles.

Where do we stand and i as a self employed business persmyself would of thiought that this would be common practise to foot the whole re fit etc bill. We have used this particular company for many years for supplies for mine and my fathers business and have recommened this company to many others.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

I would have thought it would depend as to whether the problems have been caused by the installer or whether it is a faulty batch of tiles.

Do you have any pics to help us assess the faults, please?

Hi Joanne and welcome..


It sounds like you have had a commercial grade Travertine installed and these grades IMO are not suitable for floor use, as the filler can pop out easily with foot traffic.

It also might be the fixing method which can effect the speed it has happened in.. did you see them lay the stone..?

The suppliers at first told me that this is what travertine does but they did not tell me this at the time of purchase, since then they have been out to look and agree the will replace the tiles as they aren't any good ! We wouldn't have bought the travertine if this was put to our attention first.

Yes we did see the tiler lay the floor and he put ply wood sheets own all over our floor boards and then laid them with a certain adhesive but couldn't say what sorry.

Did he put any adhesive on the back of the tile before laying, if you noticed that is

A picture of the back of one of the fixed tiles would be a very good indicator of what's happened if that's possible and the subfloor area where it was extracted from.

sorry i can't say i noticed. i tried to keep out of the way as it's been laid through hall , kitchen and conservatory. No piccies as yet but will take some and post if i can work it out. Camera battery dead at the min.

Back pasting into these holes would have give 100% coverage and if done well enough this would have stopped a lot of holes opening up but again the grade might tell a different story.

Joanne.. Travertine is perfect for floors as long as the correct grades are used...

Pics would help, but as above depends on the quality of the travertine. Some have more resin than stone

It sounds as though they haven't been back skimmed and filled from what you are saying here. If they had been this would not happen as the trav would have no where to go if solid bed fixing.
