Travertine Pavers

More of a paving question, but there are a lot of stone experts on here so I was hoping for some expert advice.

We've got travertine in our kitchen and are looking at extending the look into the garden with these pavers:

I was wondering how well travertine copes with freeze thaw conditions. My intuition says not well at all, but Googling round gives very mixed answers. The sales people say it's fine - but I'd appreciate an unbiased opinion.

What's the verdict on exterior travertine?

Whilst I think it WOULD look nice in garden........and some will probably say it is ok. I would think twice? I too would be worried about spending so much on a nice patio, only for it to be blown apart after the first heavy frost.

You could use Schlüter Ditra or Ditra xl assuming you are laying onto a solid base. This would deal with frost issues.

Although the pavers are 30mm thick, I would still be worried about the top blowing during a killer frost. Maybe me being over cautious?

I'd be more worried about the top than movement in the base. I could seal it to help prevent water penetration which would help a bit, but unfilled trav still has lots of holes in it.

It does say 'ideal for patios' 'extremely durable' I would of thought they would be fine .

It may be a 'soft' stone but is very tough, I don't personally see a problem.
I may even buy some for my patio

At 30mm it'll be fine, the only issue you'll have is voids though as it won't be filled.

I'd be inclined to fit it as though you were landscaping rather than tiling, fill the voids in the surface of the stone with a frost proof grout slurry mix, then point the joints with a more compact mix.

Avoiding leaving voids in, under or around is the critical thing with this kind of fit.

I've got 22mm travertine on my patio (about 10years now) and it's almost as good as new! It's a extremely solid piece of tile, honed and filled and of course we'll fixed.
As long as it's well grouted, no cracks to the edges and the patio has a fall, then it's as good or better material than most.
