One Day

I received my copy of TSJ today. Some of you will be aware that I personally "have issue" with TTA over a few matters - mainly pertaining to their lack of interest and engagement with us - the everyday tile fixer.

I was honestly quite stunned reading Joe Simpson's comments. Politics aside, his last sentence - suggesting that voters should be IQ tested in future - seems particularly crass and lacking in...shall we say: "sensitivity"?

Now fair enough - if I was the director (or stakeholder) in a company with European interests (as the vast majority of TTA board and associates are?) I would very likely, and for obvious reasons, want to remain in Europe.

If I was an everyday tile fixer (as many TSJ readers are) then I might very well, for other obvious reasons - have voted to leave the EU.

I cannot help but think (and this point is very much open for debate now) that Joe Simpson's opinion of those who voted to leave the EU mirrors the opinions of the corporate interests who pretty much run TTA and their opinion of the worth of tile fixers in general - somewhat uneducated and lacking IQ points.

Great way to alienate approximately 51.8% of your readership Mr. Simpson!

(discuss...)

His brexit statement..."The Brexit vote was more lemmings following buffoons", bloody cretin.

He seems to be looking after his own back pocket and his band of merry men.

They say when America sneezes we get a cold, in large we're 20 years behind the states. Let's take heed!

Send him an email he may well have posted that article to open some debate, see if he publishes your reply, if you word it well it may be in next months edition

I started to draft one Gary but I realised he's likely only to want to discuss the politics of Brexit.
This though, has further exposed the chasm between the "them and us", and I doubt very much he will want to discuss that aspect.

There really shouldn't be any "them and us" in the industry, it should be simply "us" - together.

But the past 20 years in my experience has seen a very definite gap open up between the companies (manufacturers) and the little man (us).

My rant is basically this: Why are we dictated to and held to account by manufacturers when it comes to fixing tiles? When was the last time any manufacturer (aside from Tilemaster) approached one of us and said "you know what guys? Seeing as you're fixing tiles day in day out, please would you tell us what we can do to make things better?"
The upper echelons of our industry, i.e. the guys coming up with (the woefully out-dated) BS5385 / The Tile Association etc - all appear to be in the hands of the companies. Where is the valuable input from the fixers?
Or are we viewed as lacking IQ points as Mr Simpson (perhaps inadvertantly) suggests?
Many of us are intelligent, articulate and passionate about our industry. Desperate to see standards raised and cowboys pushed out. Instead though, we have a creakingly old style Tile Association which really is nothing more than a networking club for the companies associated with it.

In a recent conversation I had with one of the board, I was told that they were trying very hard to reduce the cost of membership for fixers. I said that I and others would happily pay 5x the current fee if they delivered what we needed. You know what? He simply didn't get it. ...it did not compute...

Instead, TTA now appears to want to go down the Checkatrade route. Wrong wrong WRONG!

There is a very valuable resource of fixers out here - fixers who are more than interested in where their next job is coming from. If TTA continue to fail to engage with us and bring us onboard then someone is going to set up a fixer's association, and perhaps that's really what is needed in a new era of post-EU, illiterate, unintelligent brexit-voting tile fixing lemmings and buffoons?!

I find it unbelievable that the majority of the "in" voters think the same way, that nearly 52% of the population are racist retards. I'm an immigrant here, working, paying my taxes and social security. I voted out because I believe that it would be better for the UK in the long term, not because of my position or what it may mean to me. The EU has become far too big and moved too far away from the EEC that we signed up to.

I voted out and I'm not a racist, hate race's, in fact I hate anything to do with running...🙂
BTW I get tsj delivered, don't even bother reading it anymore.....There's nothing in there that really interests me.

But there should be stuff in there which interests us. At best though it contains advertorials so basic in nature that they're of no practical value to any decent tilers. At worst, it's just blatant advertising.
Where are the meaty, interesting technical articles? Where are the requests for reader/member input and articles? Where's the debate?

I'm not a fan of the TTA either and will never join their club. I glance through my copy of TSJ and throw it in the bin. I'm sure I read somewhere in the last issue that the UK voted to leave the UK. Proof reading job going??? Or maybe I need new bins. :sunglasses:
