Type of plaster on breeze block?

New to this, doing a bathroom refurbishment (not tiled before) I am removing a bath and replacing with a shower enclosure. I have noticed that the wall underneath the bath (original outside wall of house) is bare breeze block - what do I need to put on this to enable me to tile onto it with a waterproof adhesive? A section (1 mtr wide) of this wall will be in a shower, the rest of the wall wil eventually just be smoothed and painted, and I want to make sure the tiles wont fall off.....appreciate any help......

Depending on the thickness of the surrounding plaster you could use 9.5mm plasterboard fixed with dry wall adhesive, if that is to thick use either a gypsum plaster or sand/cement

You can use hardwall or bonding plaster. Hardwall would be better in my opinion and you can apply a thick coat in one hit if you want.

Set your tray so its slightly recessed (4-5mm) the plaster down onto it. Dont set it in too far or with your tiles your cubicle might not fit!

another question, I would like to tile underneath the shower base, what is the best adhesive to stick the base to the tiles?

Do you mean you want to tile the floor and then put the tray over the top?

Completely agree with Doug on this. Sand cement render all the way in that application. One long term issue with putting Gypsum on breeze block is that they are often made using GGBS or PFA (slag cement replacement) this in damp conditions can lead to polysulphide attack on the gypsum which will cause it to swell and fall off.

If you must plaster it you would be wise to use an epoxy primer first. Sand cement easier and more stable in this instance.

Cant seem to get on with sand/cement, must try it again but last time was a disaster. Id normally board it out with aqua panel or hardi backer

Although if its damp enough behind it to blow the plaster the tiles will be a goner anyway?

Use some rendering sand from wickes, it's a good quaility stuff.

Get hold of some febmix and mix the sand/cement at 4-1, should be ok.

Probably where i was going wrong with no additive and poor quality sand! I know i can do it its just getting used to the materials i guess....and of course getting the right materials to start with!
