I tiled a bathroom for a customer with a 2" mosaic border going around the perimeter and it is uneven. Truth is I struggled a lot with it as the mosaics were thinner than the bigger tiles. I realise my error, I messed up but at least I want to put it right. Screwing some thin plywood to the wall then tiling the border to that may have been better.

What I want to know is how would you go about removing the border and if possible reusing the mosaic tiles? any help would be appreciated.

thanks, Scott

Using a dog tooth template is the easiest way.....

Cut a template wider than the gap for the border,,,use either thin ply or a tile off cut..then cut the notches out of the template the same depth as the mosaic and a couple mm narrower than the border gap...you can then use this to bed the gap out with adhesive to the correct depth and leave it to set...then bed the mosaics into that....

if you get what i mean...some pics are on here somewhere...

Right i have done a pic on what i mean...

the left side is the wall with gap for where the mosaic goes and the right hand bit is the Dog toothed ply of cut notched to suit the mosaics....you then add adhesive and drg the dogtooth through the gap where the mosaic goes to get it to the required depth and leave to set...

replace the mosaics and pack out with these
SUPA PRO Tile and Mosaic Wall Spacers - THE TILE SOURCE

Have you used these then Sir Ramic?

Just wondering how good they are, as i'm thinking of getting some for a job i'm on at the moment where the walls are uneven and the mosaic is also smaller than the field tile.

im a (dogs tooth )i didnt know it was called that person, but i would deffo give them things sir-amic come up with a try, im an old boy but im all for new ways, well give em a chance anyway
ive done quite a few bathrooms with a mosaic border and there's no really easy way but i find its a lot easier to fix the mosaics in with the same grout as the rest of the room then any excess material can be gently smoothed off. the mosaics would obviously need grouting fully when cured, if you use adhesive , any excess coming through will be a bugger to remove without disturbing the small tiles. no doubt someone will have some reason against this but works well for me
