hi all and happy new year

i've got a floor to do next week 32"2m underfloor heating on the coil on to concrete

i'd like to know the going rate for laying the underfloor heating(got an sparky to sort thermo out)

also once i've got it down is it better to put leveling compound down over it ,then tile it .rather then just tile on to the wire

Level over the cable, charge a day rate plus materials. Single part flexi SLC aint cheap. Make sure you make a couple of quid on each of the bags.

Day rate you want between £120 - £200 area & competition dependent. I'd aim for the latter personally.

You can make a few quid on the UFH too if you get it from the right place. Try www.varme.co.uk and [DLMURL]http://www.flexel.co.uk[/DLMURL] for trade accounts, or www.floorheating.ltd.uk and www.handyheat.co.uk for competitive retail prices.

If that's 32 square meters then I'd be thinking get the floor prepped, cable down, and SLC on the first day, tile and grout it over the next couple, depending on the set out and tile type. 3 maybe 4 days.

If you're not making a penny on the UFH, SLC or Tiles then you want to make sure your labour is enough to cover you just in case you run over on time.

floor heating ltd recommend ultra flex leveller its a good price as well...
arditex can be got at a good price as well but thats a 2 part one....

thanks had to rush off sorry . just to confirm flexi self level due to it having the heating element (i.e. the coil) in it . also as i stated its on a concrete floor . would this also apply if it were a ply floor . i mean is it go practise to self level on to all underfloor heating surfaces .

I level over all UFH .. be it mats or loose cable systems...

1. It makes it easier to spread the adhesive bed.

2. It protects the cable from being snagged by your trowel...etc thus causing damage.....

cheers dave . looked it up on the internet the other day and it showed me a clip of a guy doing underfloor heating on a ply floor by going over the cable with the adhesive i thought it seemed a bit dodgy even if you use a plastic trowel . thing that concerns me is using self level in a bathroom i.e. up stairs would that not seep down the edges and through the floor boards ?

We have fitted 7 lots of under floor heating last year on ply and never used self leveling and not had any problems.

if its cable or on ply i normally go straight over with addy. if its on concrete i level it. its easier to tile over you can twang lines on it and its a smooth flat floor. havent used the flexi ultra leveller but the arditex is awesome gear but stinks awful

ive never needed to use slc and never had any problems.

Just take care and trowel with the cables and not against them.

I found on a job a builder who done a conservatory with a screeded floor put slc onto ufh (why I don't know) it crept under the wire pushing them up making the job a nightmare laying tiles

I was working on a refurb of a property a few months back, we installed Ply and put electric underfloor heating over the ply and the tiler just tiles over it with adhesive only.

This worked fine, my boss never heard anything back and its not the first one Ive seen done.
