Hi Guys

Was hoping some of you more experienced guys could advise me on the thinnest underfloor heating that I can use in a bathroom under floor tiles. In fact I could do with knowing the best way to keep the floor as low as possible when tiling and using underfloor heating? At present there is 18mm t@g floorboards across the joists which are not fixed and can be removed to be replaced with whatever is suggested i.e. 18mm ply if applicable? At the bathroom door the adjoinging carpet/underlay meeting the bathroom area is approx another 18mm and obviously want the level between the two rooms to be as close as possible. Any idea's especially since there is a need to incorporate underfloor heating if poss as well?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Keith

Everyone has there own preference like removing floor boards, 18mm WBP ply the over sheet with a hardi etc. Personally, if keeping cost down, id secure the boards, overlay with 6mm warmup insulation boards (for 2 main reasons) & use warmup UFH. Only a 3mm height to the wire & can be tiled onto. Some others will recommend putting a SLC on top for a nice smooth surface to tile onto but if your restricted in height, this may not be an option.
There is also the option of 10mm boards if the 6 is going to cut you short of your 18mm height in the hall.
Warmup will give you a lifetime guarantee of the floor & 3 years on your stat.

Our new Elektra UT10 UltraTec Underfloor Heating Cable is only 2mm.

OPTION ONE: for installing on to load bearing timber based floors ( ply ) After the Elektra UltraTec cable is installed ( wide spacing ), one of the following two ways are used to finish the area:
a) A powdered flexible self-levelling compound is used to cover the underfloor heating at approximately 4mm to 5mm in total not in addition to the 2mm cable thickness. Powdered flexible tile adhesive to fix tiles.
b) A powdered flexible tile adhesive is used to cover the underfloor heating & fix the floor finish at approximately 6mm to 8mm in total not in addition to the 2mm cable thickness.
OPTION TWO: for installing on to load bearing timber based floors ( ply ) Insulation boards first 6mm + 2mm FTA under to fix.
After the Elektra UltraTec cable is installed on the insualtion boards ( close spacing ) one of the following two ways are used to finish the area:
a) A powdered flexible self-levelling compound is used to cover the underfloor heating at approximately 4mm to 5mm in total not in addition to the 2mm cable thickness. Powdered flexible tile adhesive to fix tiles.
b) A powdered flexible tile adhesive is used to cover the underfloor heating & fix the floor finish at approximately 6mm to 8mm in total not in addition to the 2mm cable thickness.

Total amount of depth needed, depending upon tile thickness.
