I viewed a bathroom last night. It has a concrete floor, and a covering that is best described as sandpaper! i.e. a non slip surface. I’ve seen this stuff in restaurants and hospital toilets etc. It is really well stuck down and no trace of any edge to pull it up. I don’t know what it’s called, and I don’t know if it can even be pulled up. The job is so good that it looks as if it has bonded with the concrete. This bathroom is only about 6 months old, and the owner wants it tiled. Any suggestions.
Cheers

get some photo's Sean... we like pics
No photo of the floor i'm afraid, but I took a photo of the damage the customer made when he took off 6 wall tiles. The tiles are surrounding a large shower tray in a new build block of flats. The tiles are 10mm thick and are stuck hard to the plasterboard (which is blue - not green). Do you think blue plasterboard is a different type of marine board? Anyway, he stopped at 6 tiles because the wall was coming away too!

It may be an epoxy coating. Sometimes these are treated with a broadcast of silica sand whilst still tacky to produce a very hard wearing and non slip surface. That would explain it being bonded to the concrete.

Hi Sean,

Altro is a brand of safety floor, vynil and wal cladding etc.

If it is a safety floor covering it can be lifted easy enough with some elbow grease. With this type of floor you will see welded seams, usualy around the perimiter of the room if they have used a cove former (cove former is used when the floor goas approx 100mm up the wall, replacing the skirting) if there is no cove former the floor would have been fitted in one large peice similar to dommestic vnyil.

To remove try scorring a square on the floor and then sliding you knife or a chisel/ scraper under the floor if it lifts easy enough score cuts into the floor across the width of the room and lift the floor in strips. If its tough you may need to use botha hammer and an oldish chisel.

There may be lots of adhesive under the floor. If this is the case do not heat up as it will make it may tackify the adhesive making it tricky to remove. I would suggest you grind this off with a grinder and a grinding cup attachment.

Is there a kitchen on the other side of that wall? which maybe the reason for using ply to fix wall units to.

Seeing as it's metal stud work just becareful when pulling down any plasterboard as it will be fixed quite well and will cause the stud work to flex quite a lot, nothing to serious but it may causing cracking to the plaster in the other room if you're to heavy handed with it:thumbsup:
