Urgent Advice needed re Plasterboard

Hello,

I was hoping for a bit of advice please?

If the walls are in a really bad state can you dot and dab plaster board to the walls then tile onto the plasterboard?

Someone said that the plasterboard is not "fire rated" so cant be used but I looked on the web and cant find ant regulations.

Also, what adhesive would you reccomend for tiling onto plasterboard? We have topps tiles rapidset but would you recomend any other? Ideally a premixed would be better if suitable.

hi,when you say a bad state do you mean badly unlevel or falling apart?

if falling apart i wouldnt dot n dab mate but if they are solid but just bent yes dot n dab to straighten

depending what tiles your putting up for the adhesive used,,what are the tiles?

premixed adhesive is only good for small tiles not large format porcelain or stone

take all paint etc and rough plaster off walls,prime the walls and dot and dab gyproc to walls.Mapei D1 is a good dispersion adhesive.The plasterboard can also be tanked and you can get some green moisture resistant plasterboard.

All plasterboard have a certain amount fire rating, what difference would that make on tiling anyway.
What is on your walls at the moment and what size tiles are you going to be putting on

The tiles are Wet Hemp White from Topps tiles.

It was my plasterer who said that if we used plasterboard then we would need to skim the walls first as the board is not fire rated.

We are a small heating company but have started to pick up bathroom jobs and kitchens. The room is fairly small and the actual tiling is fairly straight forward. I would only tile certian jobs myself as I am not a tiler to trade but can tile pretty well if the walls are okay. I do however know my limitations and I would use a professional tiler if I wasn't capable of doing it.

However, where I need to learn is what adhesives etc can be used for what. The staff at topps tiles seem to be very helpful and have offered lots of advice but I thought it best to get advice from professionals on here.

The last thing I want to do is tile onto the plasterboard then find out they might fall off becasue I have used the wrong adhesive or that I should have used plywood instead etc.

personally i dont like using ply for walls as the ply twists bends swells etc and the resin from it can stain the tiles and grout.IF YOU WERE TO PLASTER THE GYPROC WALLS THEN YOU ARE REDUCING THE WEIGHT RATIO for the tiles to wall.As i said before you can tank the area or just tile to the gyproc.

just a few notes for you...if cement based floor then rapidset is generally used and if its a ply or membraned floor then its flexible adhesive that is used.

For walls it depends how big the tiles are but generalising say anything over 300 x 300 then a powdered(bagged) adhesive should be used.Depending on what the tile is made of for example a 300 X 300 0R SMALLER ceramic tile then you would use dispersion but if porcelain or stone then a bagged adhesive should always be used.

rapidset and flexible ,I HOPE THIS IS BRIEF ENOUGH FOR YOU TO GRASP SOMETHING FROM IT.

I see you are from Glasgow. We are based in Edinburgh but pretty much go anywhere for work. Would you be interested in sub contracting to us if we need anyone? I have a couple of bathroom re-fits in Glasgow and at the moment we are snowed under. I am thinking about taking a hit and bringing in a tiler rather than letting the customers down. We obviously wouldnt make the same proffit from the job but Id rather have happy customers and the chance of "word of mouth reccomendadions" from them than mess them about to make a bit more money.

Do you need the fire protection as per the building regulations, is it a new build house?

I dont know much about it, but do know that houses with inbuilt garages, have to have the plasterboards skimmed in the garages because bare plasterboards are not classed as fireproof to the specified ratings, I only know this because I asked the builder who built my house why the garage ceiling had been skimmed.

I think you have been mis informed about the fire regs with regard to plasterboard. Plasterboard is made from Gypsum and is classed as non combustible under the fire regs. If does degrade when exposed to extreme temperatures but 2 sheets of plaster board on a timber joist meets regs so should think one sheet on a wall which is made of brick will in now way compromise the fire regs.

Special fire resistant boards are available but these are generally used in timber frame and in buildings which need to meet special requirements for Part A of the building regs.

If plasterboard has to have special fire resistance in single dwellings there are lot of people in trouble.

Of course it could just be the plasterer touting for extra work in these tough times......

Fire doors are rated to 30 mins so the protection is the same

Is the rating not the length of time protection it gives to the structure it surrounds - I know that in Timber Frame Apartments 2 sheets is classed as 1 hour - the plasterboard itself is non combustible. If it is being placed to a Non Combustible backing it does not need a fire rating - Or am I reading the regs incorrectly?
