No, I don't use hammer and hardie, Dave, you only use that on smalti, I use a Leponnit double wheel cutter, and have my Plasplugs wetcutter and two dry cutters for the bigger stuff... as well as my JOTM prize, the diamond drill hole cutter, too. And an angle grinder... and an oil filled hand glass scourer + pliers..I think that's about it?

This one might give you a bit more of an idea about using the hammer and hardie, I recorded it about a year ago in my kitchen!
YouTube - Hammer & hardie (hardy)

I LOVE this, Lawrence!! And I'd forgotten all about marble.... wow, I have tried hammer and hardie at Gary Drostle's place with smalti, but this explanation is fantastic, good teaching, and you can tell the practice, beautifully executed! :hurray: Brilliant, thank you!! Nice arms, too

Thanks, I’m pleased it was interesting to watch.
It is a block of oak the hardie is set into as this takes the vibration best. For mosaic work they’re about the most pricey bit of kit, I do mine for £125.00 with the block or £95.00 without. Saying that though, you won’t ever have to replace the set through wear.
Most of the people I’ve supplied say it takes about 1 -2 weeks to get comfortable with.
These are the tools I’ve been using to cut 300mm x 300mm x 10mm tiles down to 8 -12mm tesserae and because it’s the weight of the hammer doing the cutting you can cut for about 3 -4 hours at a time (one 300mm tile takes about 40 minutes).
