What size notched trowel for solid bed ?

Hi there, this is my 2nd posting following my 1st one earlier this morning (solid bed or dot n dab)

As I suspected everyone says to use the solid bed method, especially in wet areas.

As I may go back to doing the tiling myself on some jobs is it acceptable to use a larger notched trowel, especially if working with large tiles and/or uneven walls and if so what size would you's guys suggest ?

Any tips/advice would be appreciated.

Excuse me for sounding dumb but what is the difference between a notched trowel and a thin/thick solid bed trowel as mentioned in the list that was in your reply,

Depends on tile format , but a square notch and a backskim will give a great adhesive bed.

Another good rule of thumb is the notched trowel to match the thickness of the tile being laid.

Find that a 10mm, back skim and a twist will give you good coverage. Don't really believe it's possible to get 100% coverage as such in everyday circumstances but as long as you're getting as much as possible then that's the main thing.

Sorry to hijack this thread but could someone kindly clarify that if using a 12mm notch trowel for larger tiles is the 12mm the depth or the width of the notch. Hope that makes sense

Both. Notch will be 12mm wide and 12mm deep, when the ribs of adhesive compress, the bed wil be 5/6mm.

Is that the same with both square and round notched trowels. I've got a rounded notch trowel with the width of 20mm and the depth of 10mm. Is that ok for 600x600 porcelain tiles.

A round notch will be 10mm deep by 20mm wide, it's half the circle essentially. And yes that will be suitable for your needs.
