Builders here favour a folding rule over a tape measure for some reason, I even started using it more than a tape and they're great for scraping off the stuff. Or I use what's closest to hand, plastic wedge, bit of wood, back of the stanley blade. Can relate to all the stories above about it either pinging off or chipping off in bits and especially the getting it under nails. Not just me then.
