where to start tiling

Hi guys am about to tile a friends bathroom. It is 9 foot x 5 foot and as you go in the bathroom, the sink is 1st on your left them the bath, and straight ahead is the toilet under the window. I am using 400x300mm tiles, so where should i start with the first full row of tiles, level with the sink bath or window sill. Whatever one i start with, the other two will have a cut tile over them because of where each is situated.

I'd be using a gauging stick and do a datum/level line around the bathroom..

Set out with the stick to find the best balance on cuts, where you may have a small cut somewhere it won't be noticed to much

Personally I'd go for a line of full tiles over the bath - assuming that the bath is level, of course - and continue that around the walls as my datum line and work from there. With luck you'll find that you get about one and a half tiles down to the floor from there.

For the horizontal alignment, I'd try to put a full tile directly behind the centre of the sink and see how that works out. Try to end up with more than half a tile at each end of the room. Not always possible, I know. On the window wall, go for a full tile in the centre of the window, if you can. Right hand wall is a reflection of the left and door wall is a reflection of the window wall too.

I always cut into baths as you can never guarantee that they are level due to the mouldings. Put a 6' straight edge along the top and I'd be surprised if it isnt concave or convex along the lip.

Basin's are generally fixed off after tiling, ( at least thats what I do!), saves cutting.

I normally find the middle of the wall height then use a guage stick to see where I can avoid nasty/unsightly slither cuts.

theres no definate point where to start, its basic trial and error until youv staffed out what will go where ensurig no slithers up along windows, overbaths etc. basic layout try splitting the height of the wall, so if halfway was 4.5 ft then staff down from that point to see what cut your left with at floor/ceiling, eg your cut is 30m off a full tile then your batton will be round the room at 370 from the floor.

i will allways try to go with a whole tile of the bath if you cut to the bath your eye is drawn to it if you cut to the floor and ceiling its less noticable
its all about whats easy on the eye

How do you go about doing this though if the bath isn't totaly level?

Ok thanks so If I was to extend this line all around the room and the batten I should be ok?
